“Almost” means “nearly, but not completely,” and “mostly” means “for the most part” or “mainly.”

  • ○ Most Japanese people like rice.(ほとんどの日本人は米が好きだ)
  • × Almost Japanese people like rice.(almost

1. almost +

  • ○ Most students passed the test.(ほとんどの学生がテストに合格した)
  • ○ Almost all the students passed the test.(ほぼすべての学生がテストに合格した)
  • × Almost students passed the test.

「あやうく〜しそうになった」は almost(または nearly)+ 過去形です。

  • ○ I almost fell down the stairs.(あやうく階段から落ちるところだった)
  • × I mostly fell down the stairs.

3. almost

  • ○ It’s almost ten o’clock.(もうすぐ10時だ)
  • ○ I’ve almost finished my homework.(宿題はほぼ終わった)
  • × Almost I forgot your birthday. → ○ I almost forgot your birthday.
