directとdirectlyの違い

directとdirectlyの違い 使い分け
スポンサーリンク

“Direct” is mainly an adjective that describes a noun, and “directly” is an adverb that describes a verb or an adjective.

「direct」と「directly」の違いは、何を説明するかで決まります。

結論から言うと、名詞の前に置いて「直接の」と言うなら direct、動詞や形容詞を説明して「直接に」と言うなら directly です。ただし「直行で」「(仲介なしに)直接」という意味では、direct もそのまま副詞として使えます。

イメージでつかむ違い

direct は「まっすぐつながっている状態」、directly は「まっすぐなやり方で何かをする」ことです。

  • パリへの直行便 → a direct flight to Paris(名詞 flight を説明)
  • その件に直接関わっている → directly involved(過去分詞 involved を説明)
  • 社長に直接話す → speak directly to the president(動詞 speak を説明)
  • 大阪まで直行で行く → go direct to Osaka / go directly to Osaka(どちらも可)

direct が副詞になるのは、主に「直行で」(go direct)と「(間に人を入れずに)直接」(buy direct from the maker)の意味です。迷ったら directly を使えば安全です。
