The Last Slice

The break room smelled like coffee and passive aggression.

Aya arrived at 10:52, eight minutes before the all-hands meeting. On the counter sat a birthday cake for Ms. Hino from accounting — or rather, what was left of it. One slice. The kind of lonely, listing slice that tells a story without words.

She poured herself a coffee and turned to find Mr. Tanaka already standing behind her, staring at the cake with the expression of a man doing mental arithmetic.

“Did you take a piece earlier?” she asked.

“No,” he said. “I was going to wait for the meeting.”

They both looked at the slice. Then at each other.

“Someone was greedy and selfish,” Aya said finally.

Mr. Tanaka sighed. “Whoever it was, they came across as selfish to the entire floor.” He picked up a sticky note from the pad near the coffee machine and wrote: This was Ms. Hino’s birthday cake. Please be considerate. He stuck it on the empty cake box.
