“Opportunity” means a good time or situation to do something, while “chance” can also mean possibility or luck.
「chance」と「opportunity」はどちらも「チャンス・機会」ですが、意味の広さとかたさが違います。
結論から言うと、opportunity は「何かをするのによい機会」、chance は「機会」に加えて「可能性・見込み」「偶然」も表す言葉です。「〜する可能性」「たまたま」と言いたいときは chance しか使えません。

イメージでつかむ違い
opportunity は「目の前に開いたドア」。chance はそのドアに加えて、「サイコロの出目のような見込み・偶然」までふくみます。
- 留学の機会を得た → I got an opportunity to study abroad.（chance も可）
- 明日は雨の可能性がある → There’s a chance of rain tomorrow.（opportunity は不可）
- 偶然昔の友だちに会った → I met an old friend by chance.（opportunity は不可）
「機会」の意味ではどちらも使えますが、opportunity のほうが「自分で生かすべき好機」というていねいな響きになります。

よくある間違い
1. 「〜する可能性」を opportunity で言う
opportunity には「起こりうる見込み」の意味はありません。可能性・確率は chance（または possibility）です。
- ○ He has a good chance of winning.（彼には勝つ見込みが十分ある）
- × There’s a good opportunity that he’ll win.
2. 「チャンスをつかむ」をそのまま訳す
「チャンスをつかむ」は take the opportunity (to do)、take the chance to do、seize the opportunity などで表します。ただし、後ろに to do がない take a chance は「（危険を承知で）一か八かやってみる」という意味になるので注意しましょう。

3. job opportunity を job chance と言う
求人や雇用の「機会」は opportunity が定番です。
