The Rule

The sign on the third-floor kitchen had been there for as long as anyone could remember.

Nobody enforced it. Nobody questioned it. It existed in the way that old signs do — as a fact of the building rather than a fact of the world.

On a Thursday in November, Kenji from the second floor made himself a coffee there.

He was halfway through drinking it when Aya appeared in the doorway.

“That sign,” she said, pointing.

Kenji looked at it. “Strictly speaking,” he said, “I work on this floor two days a week.”

“You have a desk on the second floor.”

“I have a plant on the third.”

Aya considered this. It was, she admitted to herself, a more interesting argument than she had expected. Strictly or loosely interpreted, the sign said what it said. But strictly and consistently applied, it would require someone to actually enforce it — which nobody had done in living memory.

She poured herself a coffee and sat down.

“Ms. Fujino said the policy is strictly enforced,” she said.

“Ms. Fujino also said the printer on four was strictly for client documents,” Kenji replied. “I printed my train tickets on it last Tuesday.”

This was true. Aya had seen him do it.
