The Presentation

The client had flown in from Singapore. There were six of them, and they sat on one side of the table with the particular stillness of people who had seen many presentations and been impressed by very few.

The first slide went up. She spoke clearly, without apology. By the third slide, she noticed one of the clients — a woman in a grey jacket — lean forward slightly. It was a small movement. But Aya had learned to read rooms, and small movements were the only honest feedback a room ever gave.

Twenty-two minutes later, she finished.

The grey jacket woman looked at her colleague, then back at Aya. “That,” she said, “was a splendid job.”

Aya thanked her and sat down. Mr. Tanaka, seated beside her, said nothing — which was his way of saying everything.
