A “concept” is an idea of what something is or how it works, or the main idea behind a product or plan.

「concept」は「概念」や「（商品・企画の）コンセプト」という意味の名詞です。

間違えやすいポイント

1. 思いつきには concept を使わない

concept は「まとまった考え」です。ちょっとした思いつきやアイデアには idea を使います。

• ○ I have an idea. Let’s go to the beach.（いいこと思いついた。海に行こう）
• △ I have a concept. Let’s go to the beach.（大げさで不自然）

2. 「まったくわからない」は no idea

「見当もつかない」は I have no idea. という決まった言い方です。no concept of ～ は「〜の感覚がまるでない」という意味です（He has no concept of time.＝時間の感覚がまるでない）。

• ○ I have no idea where he is.（彼がどこにいるのか、まったくわからない）
• × I have no concept where he is.（この意味では no idea を使う）

3. 「コンセプトのある店」は has a concept で言う

日本語の「コンセプトのある店」は、has a (clear) concept の形で言います。concept は名詞なので、「とても〜な」と形容詞のようには使えません。

• ○ The shop has a clear concept.（その店にははっきりしたコンセプトがある）
• × The shop is very concept.

Title: The Concept Behind the Café

Yui wanted to open a small café in her hometown. At first, she only had a few ideas: good coffee, soft music, and lots of books.

Ken liked it. “That’s a clear concept. Now all your other ideas can fit around it.” Yui chose wooden shelves, warm lighting, and dishes named after famous novels.
