John was on duty at the hotel front desk. It was his first night shift, and he was nervous. The lights were on, the phones were ringing, and guests were checking in one after another.
He looked at the clock. “I hope I can stay awake all night,” he thought. The show must go on, even when you’re tired. His manager told him, “Always stay on time and on task. If a guest needs help, be ready.”
At midnight, a guest called. “My room is too hot. The heater is on and I can’t turn it off.” John apologized and went up to the room. He found the heater was indeed on and stuck. He quickly called maintenance.
While waiting, he talked with the guest. “Sorry for the trouble. Sometimes the system turns on and off without warning,” he explained. The guest smiled. “No problem, I’m just happy someone is on the phone to help me.”
Later that night, John saw smoke. A guest had left food on the stove, and now the fire alarm was on. “The kitchen is on fire!” someone shouted. John grabbed the extinguisher and put out the fire. He stayed calm and did exactly what he had learned in training.
In the morning, his manager said, “John, you did a great job. You were on time, on the phone, and even on fire—in a good way!”
John smiled. He was tired, but proud. He was truly on the job.
