英語ストーリー(english story)
Title: Discovering Word Histories
Emma was always curious about language. One day, her English teacher gave an assignment: “Find the etymologyof a word and present it to the class.” Emma chose the word “computer.” She discovered that it originally meant “a person who computes” and came from Latin. She found this fascinating and wanted to study etymology more deeply.
At the library, she read about the roots and origins of many words. She learned that many English terms have historical etymology that goes back to Greek, Latin, or even Sanskrit. The origin of some common words surprised her.
In her presentation, Emma explained the etymology of a word and also showed how its modern usage had changed. For example, the word “nice” used to mean “foolish” in the past. She also mentioned that slang often doesn’t have clear etymology, making it hard to trace the etymology.
Her classmates were impressed. They realized that knowing the root of a word helps understand its meaning and usage. From that day, Emma often looked up the word history of any new term she learned.
